چکیده

We examine the accelerating ‘obesity epidemic’ in the US from the perspective of recently developed theory relating a cognitive hypothalamicpituitary-adrenal axis to an embedding ‘language’ of structured psychosocial stress. Using a Rate Distortion argument, the obesity epidemic is found to represent the literal writing of an image of a ratcheting pathological social hierarchy onto the bodies of American adults and children. This process, while stratified by the usual divisions of class and ethnicity, is nonetheless relentlessly engulfing even affluent majority populations. Our perspective places the common explanation that ‘obesity occurs when people eat too much and get too little exercise’ in the same category as the remark by US President Calvin ∗Address correspondence to R. From a Rate Distortion perspective, the obesity epidemic is an image of ratcheting social pathology – indexed by massive, policydriven, deurbanization and dei...

Stress, eating and the reward system.

An increasing number of people report concerns about the amount of stress in their life. At the same time obesity is an escalating health problem worldwide. Evidence is accumulating rapidly that stress related chronic stimulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and resulting excess glucocorticoid exposure may play a potential role in the development of visceral obesity. Since a...

In addition to metabolic and cardiovascular disorders, obesity is associated with adverse cognitive and emotional outcomes. Juvenile obesity enhances emotional memory and amygdala plasticity through glucocorticoids.

In addition to metabolic and cardiovascular disorders, obesity is associated with adverse cognitive and emotional outcomes. Its growing prevalence during adolescence is particularly alarming since recent evidence indicates that obesity can affect hippocampal function during this developmental period. Adolescence is a decisive period for maturation of the amygdala and the hypothalamic-pituitary-...
